Snus strength explained: mg, nicotine content and how to choose

Snus strength comes down mainly to nicotine content, printed as milligrams per gram (mg/g) on the can and, more and more often, as milligrams per pouch (mg/pouch). Snuzone sorts its range into five bands running from 1 to 65 mg/g. The number on the lid is only the starting point, though: how moist a pouch is, which form of nicotine it contains and its pH all shape how strong it actually feels.

Below you will find what the snus mg figures really mean, how much nicotine is in snus per pouch, how the Velo dot scale lines up with milligrams, and a simple way to pick a level that matches your experience. One thing to know first: on Snuzone UK, "snus" means tobacco-free nicotine pouches. Tobacco snus cannot be sold in the UK, as explained near the end.

What the numbers on a can tell you: mg/g and mg per pouch

Two figures describe nicotine content, and each answers a different question.

mg/g: the concentration

This value tells you how many milligrams of nicotine sit in each gram of pouch filling. It is the industry standard for labelling cans and the basis of Snuzone's strength categories. What it cannot tell you is how much nicotine is in the single pouch you are about to use, because pouches come in different weights.

mg per pouch: the total in one portion

This is the full amount of nicotine in one pouch, and many manufacturers now print it next to the mg/g value. For comparing two products it is the more precise number, since it reflects the portion you actually use. Bear in mind that the amount contained in a pouch is not the same as the amount released or taken up by your body.

Working it out yourself

If a can only shows mg/g, you can calculate the per-pouch figure:

Nicotine per pouch (mg) = nicotine content (mg/g) x pouch weight (g)

This is why a heavy pouch can hold more milligrams than its mg/g figure suggests. Legal limits on mg/g vary between countries, yet a cap on concentration does not automatically cap the per-pouch total. With a limit of 16.6 mg/g, for instance, a pouch carrying 1.3 g of filling would still contain 21.6 mg of nicotine (16.6 x 1.3 = 21.6).

Snus strengths at Snuzone: the five categories

Every brand signals strength its own way. Velo prints dots on the can, Klint uses numbered levels, and some high-strength brands such as Pablo use no scale at all. To make comparisons across brands easier, Snuzone groups every product by mg/g into five bands:

Category Nicotine content Typically suited to
Light 1–5 mg/g People new to nicotine pouches
Medium 6–9 mg/g Occasional users, smokers and vapers
Strong 10–14 mg/g Regular users, smokers and vapers
Extra strong 15–20 mg/g Experienced users, including smokers and vapers
Ultra strong 21–65 mg/g Very experienced users only

At the gentler end, light snus covers 1 to 5 mg/g, while medium strength snus sits in the middle at 6 to 9 mg/g. Regular users often look at strong nicotine pouches in the 10 to 14 mg/g band, and ultra strong snus at 21 to 65 mg/g is meant only for very experienced users. Treat the category as a quick filter rather than a promise: two products in the same band can still feel quite different, for the reasons covered further down.

How much nicotine is in snus? Worked examples

The answer depends on both concentration and pouch weight. These examples use figures published on Snuzone's own collection pages:

Example Calculation Nicotine per pouch
Medium, 0.6 g pouch 7 mg/g x 0.6 g 4.2 mg
Medium, 0.7 g pouch 7 mg/g x 0.7 g 4.9 mg
Strong, 0.7 g slim pouch 10–14 mg/g x 0.7 g approx. 7–9.8 mg
Large pouch at 16.6 mg/g 16.6 mg/g x 1.3 g 21.6 mg
Ultra strong, 0.7 g slim pouch 65 mg/g x 0.7 g 45.5 mg

The first two rows show the point neatly: identical mg/g, yet the heavier pouch holds 0.7 mg more nicotine. Many slim pouches weigh around 0.7 g, but mini, slim and large formats differ from brand to brand, so check the filling weight or the printed mg/pouch value instead of judging by size.

Research also suggests the label does not tell the whole story. In a randomised study of five pouch brands containing 6 to 10 mg of nicotine per pouch, McEwan et al. (2022) found that blood nicotine levels were not associated with the pouches' stated nicotine content. Nicotine levels also peaked 60 to 65 minutes into use with the pouches, compared with 7 minutes for a cigarette.

Velo snus strength: dots versus milligrams

Velo uses its own dot scale. It started with four dots and was extended as stronger products arrived, which is why you may see cans printed with four, five or six dots. The scale only compares Velo with Velo and does not translate directly to other brands. Velo products at Snuzone range from 6 to 27 mg/g, and the format (mini, slim or large) shapes the per-pouch figure:

Dots mg/g mg per pouch
1 6–8 approx. 4
2 8–9 approx. 6
3 11–14.3 approx. 9
4 15.6–16 approx. 11
5 18–20 approx. 15
6 20–27 approx. 17, max. 20

Mini pouches hold less filling, so they sit in the lower part of the Velo snus strength scale. Snuzone recommends dots 5 and 6 only for experienced users.

Why the same mg can feel stronger or milder

When people talk about snus strength, they usually mean how intensely and how quickly they feel the nicotine, often called perceived strength. Nicotine content is the biggest single driver, especially when two products share a similar recipe. Three other parts of the pouch recipe also shape the experience.

Moisture: how fast nicotine is released

Moisture mainly affects timing. Moist pouches usually give up their nicotine faster, so more dissolved nicotine reaches the lining of your mouth in a short time. In extreme cases, up to 70% of a pouch's total nicotine can be released in the first five minutes, which creates a steep early peak. Drier pouches release their nicotine more evenly over a longer period.

Nicotine form: salt, free base or polacrilex

Nicotine can be present in different forms, and they pass through the mouth's lining at different speeds:

  • Nicotine polacrilex: bound to an ion-exchange resin, slow absorption
  • Nicotine salt: moderate absorption
  • Free-base nicotine: uncharged, fast absorption

Free-base nicotine crosses the oral mucosa most easily because it carries no charge. Polacrilex, the form also used in nicotine gum, gives a slower and more controlled uptake.

pH: the hidden dial

In pouches based mainly on nicotine salts, a higher pH means a larger share of the nicotine is present as free base. That is why pH regulators show up on ingredient lists, and why a difference of a single pH unit can noticeably change how two pouches with the same mg/g feel. A 2025 laboratory study in ACS Omega likewise found that higher pH increased nicotine permeation through a model of the mouth lining.

Polacrilex behaves differently. The nicotine first has to leave the resin, and that depends on the ions in your saliva rather than on pH. Once released, it acts like a salt and pH matters again. In hybrid recipes combining salts and polacrilex, raising the pH increases the free-base share from both sources.

A tingle or burn under the lip often goes with a higher pH, Velo being a well-known example. It is not, however, a reliable guide to nicotine content or to how much nicotine your body takes in.

Factor What it changes Rule of thumb
Nicotine content (mg/g, mg/pouch) How much nicotine is available More nicotine usually means a stronger effect when recipes are similar
Moisture Release speed Moist pouches release faster, dry ones more steadily
Nicotine form Absorption speed Free base fastest, salt moderate, polacrilex slowest
pH Share of free-base nicotine Higher pH means more free base in salt-based pouches

Manufacturers combine these four levers to fine-tune a product's effect profile, so it pays to read the product description and not just the number on the lid.

Why mg/g became the standard

Portioned pouches came after loose snus, which users measured out themselves. With loose snus, mg/g was the only practical way to estimate the strength of a pinch, and that convention most likely carried over to portioned products. It explains why cans still lead with mg/g, even though mg per pouch is the more useful figure for comparing.

How to choose your snus strength

  1. Start from what you already use. Nicotine is addictive, and nicotine pouches are for adults who already use nicotine. Snuzone suggests the light band for people new to pouches.
  2. Compare mg per pouch, not only mg/g, especially between slim and large formats.
  3. Read the recipe details. A moist, high-pH pouch can feel stronger than its milligrams suggest.
  4. Use a brand's own scale within that brand only. Velo dots help you compare Velo products; milligrams work across brands.
  5. Expect personal differences. Perceived strength varies from product to product and from person to person.

UK rules worth knowing

The Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992 prohibit supplying tobacco for oral use in the UK, which covers traditional tobacco snus. Everything sold on Snuzone UK is a tobacco-free nicotine pouch. Nicotine pouches are named in the government's guidance on selling vaping and nicotine products, which sets the age of sale for all vaping and nicotine products at 18 from 29 October 2026. That guidance does not set a maximum mg/g or mg per pouch for nicotine pouches.
